AW’s Thoughts on “Somepony to watch over me”

From http://derpy.me/ke4h0

Hi it’s AW again and I thought “Somepony to watch over me” was another alright episode and I thought the “no time for a song” joke was fantastic. I liked this AppleBloom episode that turned into a AppleBloom and AppleJack episode, but it had a few odd and interesting things like the problem with AppleBloom staying home alone, AppleJack acting like an over protective mother, and the chimera at the end.

I found it odd that the rest of the Apple family didn’t want to leave AppleBloom home alone because she wanders alone or with her friends without adult supervision all the time. Most of the time AppleBloom hangs out with her friends doing dangerous stuff to get their cutie marks like zip lining or scuba diving and they usually do this with no one watching over them. AppleBloom even does dangerous stuff on her own like in “Cutie Pox” when she took a walk in the Everfree forest when she was angry. Since the adults don’t stop her from doing these dangerous things I thought that the rest of the Apple family wouldn’t mind her staying home alone, but that didn’t happen. It’s possible that they worried that AppleBloom couldn’t handle all the chores by herself, but it seemed like they were more worried about her safety. Ultimately AppleJack got worried about AppleBloom, came back, and started acting like an over protective mother.

Before this episode I never thought of AppleJack as a mother figure, but now it makes a lot of sense. AppleJack’s, Big Mac’s, and AppleBloom’s parents aren’t in the show, some of writers and Lauren Faust before she left wanted to say they were dead, but couldn’t because it was too hard, they couldn’t get approval, or some other reason. Since it’s possible that AppleBloom’s parents died when she was little it makes sense that AppleJack helped raised her and would be overly concerned with her safely. Granny Smith and Big Mac probably helped raise AppleBloom too, but AppleJack’s attitude made me think that she did most of it. A lot of this paragraph could be viewed as speculation or head canon, but I thought it was possible after seeing over protective AppleJack mom. The last thing I want to talk about before I’m done is the chimera and AJ’s fight with it at the end of the episode.

I really like it when the show adds new mythological monsters like the chimera and I didn’t mind that it had a tiger body instead of a lion body because the show already had the Manticore and it had a lion body. Also chimeras can be any animal combo not just lion, goat, and snake, but I’m not sure if a chimera should be one mind, one voice or three minds and three voices. Speaking of voices I had a few problems with the chimera’s voices, the tiger’s voice was cool and intimidating, but the other two were not cool or intimidating. If I remember correctly all three parts were supposed to be female, but the tiger’s voice sounded male and I think it was because of the editing. Anyway I liked the chimera and I really like the action scene with AJ vs. the chimera even though it was a bit silly. The end of the episode in swamp town was alright and I likely the ending dialog with AJ and AppleBloom it was pretty good and tied up the moral.

Thank you for reading and please tell me what you thought of this episode and what you thought about AJ in black fire proof boots. I do wonder what happened to Big Mac, did he have an equally dangerous route or did AJ take the dangerous route while Big Mac took the safe route.

AW’s thoughts on “It Ain't Easy Being Breezies”

Hello this AW also known as AlienWarhead and I’d like to share my thoughts and analysis on “It Ain't Easy Being Breezies”. This episode was alright, it had some good jokes like Rarity’s shiny fashion, and I liked the breezies, but I thought the episode overhyped the cuteness of the breezies. I thought they were cute, but not as cute as everyone in the episode said they were because I thought parts of their design were weird like their long legs. Other parts of their design were cute like their simlish or Celtic like voices even though the cuteness of their voices made Sea Breeze sound female despite being called male. The most interesting part of the episode for me was the key/element of kindness lesson.

It seemed that Fluttershy got her key this episode and had her lesson on her element like Rarity in “Rarity takes Manehatten”. Fluttershy has being overly kind to the Breezies and her kindness was hurting them because the Breezies were getting use to Fluttershy’s kindness instead of going to the safety of their home. Later when Fluttershy had to be mean to the bees to stop them from hurting Sea Breeze the episode showed that sometimes you have to mean to someone for their own good and too much kindness can hurt someone. This lesson seems backwards for the element of kindness, but I feel this is a realistic lesson about kindness like the lesson from “Rarity Takes Manehatten” that states that people will take advantage of your generosity, but don’t let that stop you. You could also argue that Fluttershy being mean to the Breezies was kinder than being overly nice to the Breezies because the Breezies needed to go home before the portal closed and it was hard for Fluttershy to do the right thing by telling the Breezies to leave. It seems like the episode is favoring being mean over being nice, but the episode shows being mean doesn’t always work by showing the Breezies not listening to the overly mean Sea Breeze. I really liked this lesson, the rest of this episode was fine, and I thought the ending were the Mane 6 turned into breezies was surprising, but I didn’t hate it.

I hope the next key episode will have a lesson as good as this one and I’m guessing it will be AppleJack because I think Twilight’s key will last. I haven’t posted an article in a while because I lost interest in analysis and I’m not sure if it’s completely back and if I’ll keep doing this. Thanks for reading this and one more thing, the show had a big Doctor Who reference for no reason in the form of Doctor Whooves wearing 3D glasses and hanging out with Roseluck. This is a reference to the Tenth Doctor episode “Doomday” were he worth 3D glasses for part of the episode and Roseluck in this instant is probably a reference to one of the Doctor’s companions Rose Tyler.

Twilight royal duties analysis

Twilight’s royal duties analysis

Source: http://www.deviantart.com/art/Twilight-Sparkle-386639470

Hello everyone sorry I haven’t posted in a while, but I’ve been distracted by college and other things in my life, but today I wanted to wanted to write about Twilight’s royal duties. Season 4 is coming up soon and we’ll probably see a lot of Alicorn Princess Twilight and maybe we’ll see her fulfill her royal duties, but what are they? It’s hard to tell what her duties are because we only saw Princess Twilight briefly at the end of season 3, but she showed up in two novels and Equestria Girls.

The first novel that Alicorn Twilight was in is “My Little Pony: Twilight Sparkle and the Crystal Heart Spell” and the second novel is “My Little Pony: Pinkie Pie and the Rockin' Ponypalooza Party!”. In the first novel, Twilight is still living in Ponyville and is worried about being a leader and possibly ruling a nation so she went to ask Princess Cadence for advice because it was too embarrassing to ask Princess Celestia for some reason. The strange part is that Twilight wasn’t sure if she was going to rule a nation just that she had to be a leader, why wasn’t Twilight certain? I would think that Celestia would tell Twilight what her royal duties are so Twilight would be prepared for it or maybe Celestia wants to wait for Twilight to get used to be Alicorn before dropping a lot of responsibly on her. The next novel is about Pinkie Pie instead of Twilight, but Princess Twilight still gets some focus.

In this novel Twilight is still living in Ponyville and not living in a castle or in nation she rules, but ponies are coming to her for royal help. Pinkie’s family comes to ponyville to ask Twilight for help saving their rock farm because they want help from a princess. Maybe one of Twilight’s royal duties is taking requests from ponies, but I’m not if Twilight has done this kind of thing before or if Celestia assigned her to pony requests duty. The alicorn version of Twilight showed up briefly in “Equestria Girls” because she was going to attend a princess summit, but it was probably canceled after Sunset Shimmer stole the crown. Attending royal summits sounds like a royal duty, but Princess Twilight should have other duties and Twilight still wasn’t sure what is expected of her. Princess Twilight was also in issue 13 of the My Little Pony IDW comic, but it just came out and I don’t want to spoil it, I will say that Twilight doesn’t really do anything royal in it. I would think Twilight would be ruling something, living in a castle, or taking special princess courses from Celestia instead of staying in Ponyville and not knowing what she is supposed to do, but something familiar happened to Princess Cadence.

When Cadence was a younger Alicorn before the wedding happened she lived with in Caterlot Castle with Celestia after Celestia found her and helped her become an alicorn. This is unlike Twilight who stills live in Ponyville after becoming a princess, but Cadence still had a normal life even though ponies treated her differently because she is a princess, the same thing happened to Twilight. Cadence went to high school and had a part time job even though she was princess who going to rule an empire. I’m not sure if Cadence knew she was going to rule the Crystal Empire when she was younger, but Cadence did mention that she wanted to live in a crystal palace a couple times in the comics. It seems that Celestia lets her new princesses live normal or semi-normal life after they become Alicorns instead of giving princess lessons or dumping a lot on responsibly on someone as soon as they become a princess. Maybe Celestia thinks life is the best teacher because instead of teaching Twilight friendship she made Twilight go out into the world and make some friends. So I think when Twilight became a princess Celestia let Twilight learn on her instead of giving princess lessons and when Twilight is ready Celestia will Twilight what all of her duties are.

Twilight only has a few duties like attending summits or maybe helping ponies with their problems, but Celestia will tell Twilight what her main royal duty when she is ready. Thank you reading and I’ll try to make more analysis articles, but I have a final coming up next month and when season 4 premiers there might be a flood of analysis articles and videos.

The Doctor and Derpy, IDW comic analysis (spoilers)

The Doctor and Derpy IDW comic analysis (spoilers)

The My Little Pony IDW comics include a lot of great background events and background ponies such as Vinyl Scratch and Octavia. The latest non-micro comic issues #9 and #10 featured Big Mac and showed more background events and ponies than usual like when Doctor Whooves and Derpy are talking to each other in the background, but the talk is a bit weird. The picture below from issue #9 has Derpy asking Doctor Whooves “Do I know you?” after the Doctor showed her a fob watch and saying “This watch is me”. Does this mean that Derpy never met the Doctor despite the fact they were seen together in the episode titled “Hearts and Hooves day” and in an issue #10 alternate cover? I don’t think that writers would want to tell people that the Doctor and Derpy never met before so I have a few theories about this panel.

1. Backwards Doctor Who reference
This mostly likely a reference to a Doctor Who Series 3 episode titled “Human Nature” where the Tenth Doctor hides from aliens by putting his essence of a time lord into a fob watch by using a piece of technology called a Chameleon Arch. This turned the Tenth Doctor into a human and he mostly forgot his time as the Doctor, but his companion at the time Martha Jones remembered who the Doctor was. If we assume that Derpy is supposed to be the Doctor’s companion here she should remember who Doctor Whooves is and Doctor Whooves should not remember who he is. The writers probably got who remembered who backwards, but they got the quote “This watch is me” right.

2. Doctor Whooves met Derpy in the future
In Doctor Who people sometimes met a person before their first meeting because one of them or both of them are time travelers. For example, if the Doctor met person X in 2009, time traveled to 2007, and met person X in 2007, person X wouldn’t recognize the Doctor. This could have happened in the comic even though the comic takes place after season 2 and Doctor Whooves and Derpy were seen together before the end of season 2, but time travel can be confusing and complex.

3. Big Mac or Doctor Whooves created a time paradox
A lot of weird things could have happened when Doctor Whooves was time traveling such as time breaking down or aliens messed with time and they created a time paradox, but Big Mac is also a time traveler. Two pages after the Doctor and Derpy scene a full page scene shows Big McIntosh traveling and doing stuff around the fair like eating a ton of food and jumping on a trampoline. In one part of this scene Big Mac goes into a science fair, accidentally enters a time warp, saves ponyville from mutant apes and comes back 5 minutes later. Who knows what happened when Big Mac time traveled he could have changed the future, created a time paradox, and stopped Derpy from meeting Doctor Whooves the first time. Doctor Whooves probably remembers because he is a time traveler or he was in the Tardis while time was changed.

Thank you for reading this article and please tell me what you think about the Derpy and Doctor meeting, I think it’s a backwards Doctor Who reference. I know that my theories may fall into head canon territory, but I feel that they are interesting theories.

Equestria Girls final thoughts

I had a lot to say about “Equestria Girls” I wrote several posts and comments on http://www.reddit.com/r/MLPAnalysis about the movie and one really long article on this blog because the movie means a lot to me. Months before the Equestria Girls was announced I hoped that a MLP FIM movie come out and I’d be able to hang out we other bronies at a theater, but I thought it would not happen. When it was announced I though the human thing was weird, but I didn’t panic because I was used to fandom crisis like pink alicorn Cadence and princess Twilight. Now that the movie been out for a while and aired on TV I feel there are a few things left to say and analyze before I move on to other analysis.

A while ago on www.BronyState.net I was listening to some of the moderators talk after an episode of My Little Pony and they were talking about whether or not a My Little Pony Friendship is Magic movie would work. I don’t remember the exact words, but one of them said people would get bored watching flash animation for more than an hour. I’m not sure if this is true, but it got me thinking, would a normal pony movie work instead of Equestria Girls? A lot of people would say that a normal pony movie would work and they would prefer it over Equestria Girls, but many would call a normal pony movie an extra-long episode. The Simpsons and Aqua Teen Hunger Force movies were called long episodes and some people thought Equestria Girls felt like a long episode, but Equestria Girls is different than a normal episode. Also a normal pony movie would probably feel similar to an epic My Little Pony two-part story like “A Canterlot Wedding” which can be a good or bad, but I think it’s a good thing that Equestria Girls is different. You may not like the movie, but it probably peaked your interest and got you emotional or passionate about something. What’s better a boring movie you barely remember or a movie that really pisses you off, gives you something to talk about, and gives you something to remember? So what I’m trying to say is that it’s a good thing that Equestria Girls because of all the positive and negative emotions and reactions it gave us.

I enjoyed watching Equestria Girls in theaters and talking about it, but I didn't like what some people were saying about it. I understand and accept that some people won’t like it, but I didn't think it deserved all the hate it was getting because it was being judged before it was released and it could have been a lot worse. For example, the Twilight and Flash Sentry relationship won’t be explored in season 4, they didn't kiss, and Flash Sentry had a few funny moments. Also there are way worst movies based on animated series like “The Last Airbender”, that movie did terribly, but the series it’s based on “Avatar the Last Airbender” kept going with comic books and a new series called “The Legend of Korra”. The My Little Pony franchise would have keep going if Equestria Girls failed because the series, comic books and merchandise were doing well enough that a bad movie wouldn't stop it. I do have a few more things I want to say, but I don’t want to repeat more of what I said or wrote elsewhere.

Thank you for reading and I’m glad I got this stuff off my chest so I start writing about other things. If I find the time to write I’ll probably write about the comics, most likely issues 9 and 10 they are the issues about Big Mac.

Bronycon 2013 analysis panel analysis

Bronycon 2013 analysis panel analysis

source: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=naMcXCJrx1o

Several weeks ago Digibrony and Bronycurious hosted an analysis panel with PaleoSteno called “Thoroughly Analyzing MLP” and I was lucky enough to attend. It was mostly a discussion panel where the panelists asked for topics to analyze or discuss. There were some silly topics like “pink fluffy unicorns dancing on rainbows”, but we did get to some interesting topics like what happens when a pony gets their cutie mark, learns their special talent and wants to do something else. The answer was that ponies are different then people, ponies go to school, find their special talent and cutie mark, finish school, and enjoy working at a job by using their special talent without thinking that they should try something else. Besides analysis, discussion, and Q&A the panelists gave introductions, explained why they analyze, and random banter. I enjoyed the panel, but there are two points I wish to discuss, panel structure and memes.

1. Panel structure
The panel worked as a discussion panel, but I wanted more structure or things planned such as new videos shown first at Bronycon. It would have nice if Digibrony or Bronycurious debuted a new video or made a big announcement, but I think Bronycurious mentioned a video coming in November. This point may be nitpicking because I liked the panel, but I felt like bringing it up because I thought it was cool when other panels debuted new content and I wished that the analysis panel would do that.

2. Memes
Whenever the panelists said fun some of the attendees would repeat fun, fun, fun like the Pinkie Pie clones and that would annoy the panelists. A panel is not the time or the place for the Pinkie Pie fun meme it wastes time, it can piss off the panelists, and it can become annoying. The meme is fine when you are in line or are waiting for something, but you shouldn’t waste time in a panel. The panelists are pressed for time because there is usually a panel after the current panel and they can’t get to everyone’s question. Also it sucks that they can’t say fun without people repeating fun, fun, fun, panelists have to watch what they say more and get stressed out over it. Sometimes the panelists enjoyed the fun meme, but I felt it mostly wasted time and was annoying.

Thank you for reading my article and if you’re curious I was in the video and I was on camera for a second when that one lady asked about pink fluffy unicorns, I was the slightly Asian guy with glasses. Also Digibrony called me that with the glasses when I was picked around the 24 minute mark, I asked the panelist’s opinion on written analysis vs. video analysis.

THE SCRIPTS SAY SO, My Response to Bronycurious’s Equestria Girls livestream

THE SCRIPTS SAY SO, My Response to Bronycurious’s Equestria Girls livestream

Bronycurious by Bronycurious source: http://www.deviantart.com/art/Six-Months-Progress-359875860

Several days ago Bronycurious one of my favorite analysts streamed Equestria Girls and he watched it with some friends on a Skype call. Bronycurious really didn’t like it, got angry, got loud, bashed it, pointed out flaws, plot holes, etc. I on the other hand really liked Equestria Girls and it’s alright if others don’t like what I like, but I felt the need to point out where he was wrong and to response to the statements and questions made by Bronycurious and his friends.  I’m going to list the points I want to respond to, put time stamps from the link below and I’m probably not going to quote directly. I couldn’t read the chat, I didn’t watch it live, I watched the recording and the chat was blurry.

1. [35:35] Twilight could have grabbed Sunset Shimmer in a magical aura.
Shimmer would have just teleported out of the hold, Twilight couldn’t have know, but her first instinct was probably to chase Shimmer and use a quick spell like teleport to help her to catch Sunset Shimmer.

2. [37:33] Why is the mirror out in the open because the plot said.
Technically it’s because Celestia was hoping Sunset Shimmer would come back seeking her guidance and locking the mirror in a crate would have probably stopped Shimmer from coming back.

3. [38:18] Luckily Twilight Sparkle doesn’t exist in this world because the script says so.
Twilight does exist in the other world because later human Pinkie Pie mention a girl and a dog living in the city that looks like the changed Twilight and Spike.

4. [39:35] Why is Twilight freaking out over having hands when she knows what hands are?
If you never had hands before and your fore legs were suddenly replaced with arms and hands you would freak out too.

5. [44:20] Why didn’t Sunset Shimmer recognized Twilight the first time.
Shimmer may not have expected Twilight to follow her into the human and Shimmer wasn’t sure what Twilight would look like in the other world, also Shimmer isn’t perfect and she admitted her mistake later.

6. [45:10] How was the dog allowed into the school?
He isn’t allowed into the school, Twilight hides Spike most of the time and she was lucky enough to not get caught.

7 [45:42] Why doesn’t Twilight tell the true about the crown to get it back?
This point is brought up a few times in the stream and she tells the true later, but not to Principle Celestia. Twilight doesn’t want to tell the truth until later because they don’t think anyone will believe them and she told that to Spike later. They could show the mirror to Principle Celestia or have Spike talk to her, but that could upset the balance between the two worlds.

8. [46:05] I wonder how Fluttershy feels about animals being put to sleep at the shelter
It’s possible that Fluttershy goes to a no kill animal shelter and if not Fluttershy probably just feels sad that some animals are put down.

9. [46:28] The crown uses dark magic in the human world because it is more evil than Equestria.
Someone in the Skype said that the element of harmony reacted to the corruptness in Shimmer’s heart and then Tommy Oliver aka Bronycuroius said that doesn’t make sense an element of harmony wouldn’t react in a disharmonious way like that. Also Tommy said it shouldn’t act independently, but I don’t see why a good magical item can’t a negative effect on a bad person, magic can have weird rules sometime, like how Star Swirl’s spell can somehow make the elements switch cutie marks.

10. [48:06] How did Shimmer win the crown 3 times over, she should have graduated by now.
If this a 9 – 12 grade high school she could have won the crown in 9th, 10th and 11th grade and now she is in 12th grade.

11. [52:30] Why does Big Mac have normal skin color?
Pony Big Mac has a red coat and if human Mac had skin to match he would have red skin and it would have looked weird.

12. [Many Times] THE SCRIPT SAYS NO! THE SCRIPT SAID SO!
I’m not sure how to feel about this phase half of me thinks this is funny and they’re good lines while the other half says of course the script said no or so movies are supposed to follow scripts and please stop yelling into microphone I like to wear headphones.

13. [1:06:00] Why would Sunset Shimmer break up the human version of Twilight’s friends she couldn’t have known that they were Twilight’s friends in the pony world.
I think that Sunset Shimmer did a lot of mischief while in the human world and probably affected a lot of student to get her feared reputation. Twilight’s human friends were just another victim of Sunset Shimmer, maybe one of them might have crossed Shimmer and she decided to break up their friendship. At the end it’s implied that Rarity opposed Shimmer in the Spring Fling so maybe that’s why Shimmer broke up the friendship.

14. [1:13:35] What’s with the skirts and giant boots?
Maybe that’s just the fashion trend right it’s not just the human mane 6 other girls like Trixie have giant boots and a skirt, this point was addressed later at [01:24:21]. AppleJack and Rainbow Dash may not be super fashionable, but they still might want to go with the trend. Later Tommy asks Rainbow Dash is wearing shorts under the skirt it’s because a skirt over shorts is a common tomboy fashion choice, take Chie Satonaka from Persona 4 as an example.

Chie Satonaka
source: http://www.creativeuncut.com/gallery-22/p4a-chie-satonaka.html

15. [1:26:20] Twilight should’ve stolen the crown in the first place.
I’ve talked about this before on reddit, but I wanted to say what I learned from the comments. Celestia said that she told Luna to put the crown in a safe place, that could be anywhere and that means that neither Twilight nor Sunset Shimmer knew where the crown was and they couldn’t have stolen it before the dance.

16. [1:29:48] Why didn’t Twilight get powers or transform when she put on the crown isn’t that what the crown does in the other world?
She might have got powers when she put on the crown, but not use them and Twilight didn’t transform because she doesn’t have darkness in her heart like Sunset Shimmer. It’s weird that the element of harmony can do that, but it’s explained later and no one said that the element(s) couldn’t be used for disharmony. At around [1:31:00] Tommy brings up the point that elements didn’t work when four of the mane 6 were discorded instead of transforming them. I believe that being discorded is different than having evil in your heart.

17. [1:31:42] The teenage army would turn into ponies and the demon powers would revert.
We’re assuming that would happen because Twilight turns back into a pony by going through the mirror and that Sunset couldn’t turn into the demon in the pony world. Now that Sunset has the demon powers she may be able to negate the turning into ponies transformation and keep her demon powers in Equestria.

18. [1:34:00] Twilight and her human friends can use the power of harmony without the crown, so why is it important?
It’s important because evil people can use it to become demons and she may not be able to use the power of harmony without the crown in the pony world.

19. [1:38:21] Equestria Girls was made so people would calm down about Alicorn Twilight.
I’ve never heard this before and it doesn’t make sense, Twilight isn’t an Alicorn for most of the movie, but she is still an Alicorn in the beginning and end.  Equestria Girls was made so that Hasbro could compete with Monster High and Tommy mentioned that earlier in the stream. Also how is possible that this movie was made to calm people this movie has the opposite effect on a lot of people like the people in the stream.

20. [02:09:38] How is it possible that Sunset Shimmer and Twilight Sparkle never crossed before both were Celestia’s students, they seem to be about age, and Sunset was a student before Twilight did she turn evil and go to the human world as a filly.
Tommy asked a lot questions here, but I think I can answer this. Sunset was a student of Celestia’s before Twilight, but turned evil and left to the human world years later. It’s possible that Celestia teaches some students one on one and some in a classroom, Sunset and Twilight could have gotten separate one on one time. That would have taken a lot of time, but Celestia may have given them a lot of homework or solo work.

It seems that I had a lot to say about this live stream so thank you for reading the whole thing. One of the reasons I wrote this was because I’m passionate about Equestria Girls, I wanted a MLP FIM movie for a while, and I wanted to defend it. . Despite the fact I wrote this article to say Tommy Oliver was wrong I have a lot of respect for the man and I greatly enjoy his work. To prove this I’m going to show you readers what I made sure to get at BronyCon this year. So thank you again for reading, my next blog post will probably be about BronyCon sorry if you couldn’t make it, and goodbye.

I got the autographs from the MLP analysis panel
